AMRITSAR : Three persons were injured in a firing that took place near the premises of a religious place at Kot Khalsa locality here on Saturday. The incident allegedly occurred following a marital dispute between a couple.

Police said the main accused, Sagar, a resident of the said locality, married a 26-year-old woman a year ago. His wife suffered from an ailment following which, Sagar decided to get rid of her and refused to keep her in his house and sent her to her parent’s home.

Her parents got her treated and three months after she fully recovered, her husband asked her to return to him. However, she refused to go back while her parents supported her decision. The woman’s parents said that they would not send their daughter back to the man who abandoned her at the time of need.

Thereafter, her husband made several attempts to bring her back to his home, but failed. He also had a verbal spat with Dharmendra, his wife’s uncle, around 15 days ago over this. “On the occasion of a religious festival being celebrated near the religious place, Sagar, along with his aides, came to the festival where Dharmendra and his friends were already present. Sagar began fighting with them for not allowing his wife to go along with him,” said Jagjit Singh Walia, additional commissioner of police (ADCP)-1.

“Keeping a grudge in his mind, Sagar and his aides opened fire at Dharmendra and his aides identified as Golu and Gaurav Sharma, leaving them injured. The injured are undergoing treatment in a hospital where Golu’s condition is said to be critical,” he said, adding, “A case has been registered against Sagar and his unidentified aides under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in Kot Khalsa Police Station.”

Leaving them injured, the attackers fled from the spot and police teams are out to search them and arrest them, the ADCP said.
