KAPURTHALA: Two days after a 35-year-old non-resident set himself and his family ablaze suspecting infidelity, the Kapurthala police on Saturday has decided to send the mobile phone to Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Kharar, which was allegedly used to film obscene video and photos of the woman.

The police said the phone has been sent to recover deleted content of mobile phone and verify that video was not tampered with.

A non-resident Indian (NRI), Kulwinder Singh, who landed here from Jordan on Wednesday night, set himself, his wife and two minor children ablaze at Alamgir village in the district on Thursday, after he came to know about video and her wife’s affair with another man in the village.

The deceased have been identified as Kulwinder Singh, his wife Mandeep Kaur, five-yearold son Abhi and eight-year-old daughter Sonal.

The police have recovered the mobile phone of accused, identified as Gurpreet Singh alias Sunny, on Saturday and also recovered one objectionable video and some photographs of the victim in the mobile.

“Sunny was having illicit relations with Mandeep Kaur from past one year. During this period, he filmed few objectionable videos and photos and shared with his friends. But some of the videos have been deleted by him now,” said deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Sarabjit Singh and added that they will send the mobile to the forensic lab to recover those deleted videos and also to verify if the video was not tampered with.

He further added that Sunny’s mother, Satya Devi, also used to blackmail Mandeep to extort money from her.

“All of them were blackmailing Mandeep for sexual favours and to extort money. Sunny has confessed that he has shared videos with friends,” DSP said.

Sunny along with his friend, Balkar Singh alias Mantri, were arrested on Thursday.

As per the case, Kulwinder Singh committed the crime at around 4 am after he allegedly came to know about an illicit relationship of his wife Mandeep Kaur, 30.

Kulwinder and his son Abhi died on the spot while daughter Sonal succumbed to injuries in the Kapurthala civil hospital. Mandeep was referred to the Jalandhar civil hospital where she died after making a statement to the police.

“When I talked to my husband about this, he got furious. Later, when we were sleeping he poured kerosene on us and set us on fire,” she told the police in her statement before she died.

Meanwhile, superintendent of police (SP) Jagjit Singh Saroya said that remaining accused, Satya and friend Tirath Singh, will be arrested soon and the raids are on.

A case under Sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against all the four accused.
