JAIPUR: A 26-year-old Dalit man was beaten to death in Jalore district on August 1 allegedly by eight men who suspected that he had an affair with the wife of one of the accused, police said.

The accused were arrested on August 3 and presented before a local court on Saturday. The court remanded them to police custody for three days.

Body of Mahendra Meghwal was found in an SUV parked outside a hospital on Sayala town in Jalore district on August 2.

Police investigation found out Rekha Kanwar, wife of Narpat Singh, went missing on July 27, along with her daughter. Kanwar is from Ahmedabad, where Meghwal worked until a month ago. “Her family suspected that the two had an affair and Meghwal had kidnapped her,” said Jalore’s additional SP Ram Kumar Kaswan.

On August 1, Narpat Singh and seven others took Meghwal to an isolated place outside the village, hung him from a tree and beat him up in order to get information about the woman’s whereabouts.

“The following day, they took him to Ahmedabad in an SUV. When the accused failed to get information from him about the woman, they beat him to death,” the officer said.

They returned to Sayala on Thursday morning and abandoned the SUV with the man’s body.

The villagers informed Meghwal’s father Lukaram Meghwal that his son was kidnapped by eight villagers, after which he lodged an FIR at the Sayla police station on August 2, naming the accused.
