India bag historic TT bronze after men lose to Korea

JAKARTA: India table tennis men’s team settled for a historic bronze medal after losing 3-0 to South Korea in a lop-sided semi-final at the 18th Asian Games on Tuesday.

G Sathiyan suffered a 11-9, 9-11, 3-11, 3-11 loss to Lee Sangsu in the first game. Experience­d Sharath Kamal put up a fight before going down 9-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-7, 8-11 to Young Sik Jeoung in the second match. In the decider, Amalraj was beaten 5-11, 7-11, 11-4, 7-11 by Woojin Jang as South Korea won 3-0.

BOXERS WINLESS

Pavitra’s valiant effort fell just short while Sonia Lather couldn’t figure things out at all as India boxers endured a winless day.

Sonia disappoint­ed in a unanimous points defeat to North Korea’s Jo Son Hwa in the women’s featherwei­ght (57kg) quarter-final. Pavitra, making her debut at the Games, stood her ground but the effort could not find favour with a majority of the judges, who ruled 3-2 in favour of Indonesia’s Huswatun Hasanah in the lightweigh­t 60kg category.

INDIA LOSE TO PAK

India volleyball men’s team lost 3-1 to Pakistan in a 7-12 classifica­tion match on Tuesday. India made an impressive start, pocketing the first set 25-21. But Pakistan fought back to win the second and third sets 25-21 both.

In the fourth set, India could only score 23-25 as Pakistan emerged victorious.

GOOD DAY IN SQUASH

India continued its march ahead with another good day in the squash team event.

Barring Harinder Pal Sandhu, who lost to Al Tamini Abdulla in the men’s tie against Qatar, no other Indian faced any problem.

Harinder’s loss meant both Ramit Tandon and Mahesh Mangaonkar had to be cautious but both were up to the task as India ekedouta2-1win.

All other matches ended in India’s favour with an identical 3-0 margins.
