COMPLAINANT HAD APPROACHED THE VB CLAIMING THE SI WAS DEMANDING A BRIBE OF ₹5,000 TO PRESENT A CASE CHALLAN BEFORE DISTRICT COURT IN A SUICIDE CASE

PHILLAUR (JALANDHAR) : The vigilance bureau (VB) arrested a sub-inspector (SI), Bakshish Singh, from Phillaur police station while accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 on Friday.

Complainant Vijay Kumar, a resident of Nangal village of Phillaur subdivision, had approached the VB claiming that the SI was demanding a bribe of ₹5,000 to present a case challan before the district court in a suicide case against his son.

The complainant said his son Ravi Kumar, who was posted as an instructor at the police academy in Phillaur, committed suicide after a tiff with his wife Rajvir Kaur in 2016.

He said the local police then registered a case under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CRPC). Following this, he approached the Punjab and Haryana high court and a case under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of IPC was registered against Rajvir Kaur.

Bakshish was the investigation officer in the case.

The complainant said that despite registration of the case, the SI was dilly-dallying in submitting the challan in the court. He later demanded Rs 5000 as a bribe.

Vigilance SSP DS Dhillon said a trap was laid and a vigilance team nabbed the SI while accepting the bribe.

He said a case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act against the accused.
