SANGRUR: Former Railway Advisory Board member and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) worker Charanjit Garg and his wife Pooja were shot dead in Sangrur on Sunday night.

Garg was an active SAD worker and was said to be close to former Union minister and Rajya Sabha member Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, who had nominated him to the Railway Advisory Board.

The incident took place around 11pm when the couple was going towards Raj Senior Secondary School in a car. The car-borne assailants intercepted their vehicle and stabbed Garg and his wife before shooting them dead from a point-blank range.

Police have booked four persons, Jaidev Jojo, Rakesh Sharma, alias Jassi, his brother Pradeep Sharma and a former municipal councillor Pompy. All accused are on the run, Police are conducting raids to arrest them, said Palwinder Singh, SHO Sangrur City Police station.

Garg’s brother Karamjit said his brother called him last night saying that their car has been intercepted by some assailants and sought help. “We rushed to the spot only to find their bloodstained bodies,” said Karamjit.

The SHO said the accused pulled the couple out of the car, thrashed them, stabbed them and shot them ensuring that they are dead. Monetary dispute is suspected to be the reason behind the murder as Garg had lent some money to Jassi and was demanding it back.

The post-mortem report revealed that the couple was attacked with sharp-edged weapons before being shot.

Senior superintendent of police Sandeep Garg said a murder case has been registered on the complaint of Garg’s brother. A hunt has been launched to nab the accused.

Former Akali minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa, who visited Garg’s residence on Monday, said law and order situation has deteriorated in the state and goons backed by the ruling Congress are committing crime without any fear of law. He also asked the SSP to initiate prompt action in the case.
