› Over 6 lakh farmers, upset at the govt for not meeting promises it made before assembly polls have signed the memorandum.

BS RAJEWAL, farm leader

Chandigarh Farm leader Balbir Singh Rajewal will lead a 15-member delegation of farmers to submit a memorandum over unfulfilled demands to Punjab governor VP Singh Badnore on Tuesday. Rajewal is the leader of a faction of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU).

“Over 6 lakh farmers, upset at the Congress government for not keeping the promises it made before the assembly polls of 2017, have signed the memorandum,” Rajewal claimed, adding that the farmers will gather in Mohali and march towards the governor house to submit the memorandum. The Congress had prepared a 129-page manifesto, but did nothing, he claimed.

“Take an example of the entire debt waiver promise for all farmers. On coming to power, the waiver announced covered only a section of the farmers and only a percentage of farmers gained,” Rajewal said, adding ₹1,000 crore were given to farmers as free power, but the government took back ₹1,200 crore by tariff hike.

He added, “We have taken time from the governor and seek his intervention for making a law that incase the party that assumes power fails to implement promises based on which it had risen to officer, the government be dissolved.”
