JAMMU: In a disturbing trend, a 29-year-old youth with a master’s degree in business administration from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University has allegedly joined Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) terror outfit on Saturday.

“Yes, 29-year old Haroon Abbas Wani of Ghat in Doda district, an MBA from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University has joined a militant outfit. His picture has gone viral on whatsapp. Two days ago he joined militant ranks,” deputy inspector general of police (DIG) Doda-kishtwar-ramban range, Rafiq-ulhassan Qadri told Hindustan Times.

He has been given code name of Moin-ul-islam by the HM outfit. The development surfaced on Monday after his picture went viral on social media sites.

“Of course, it is shocking for everybody. We are at it. He is a well qualified youth, an MBA from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University. His father is a serving engineer and one of his brothers is an MA. He comes from a very good and qualified family. We are looking into it,” he said.

The DIG said that from his picture with an assault rifle, he appeared to be in Shopian in south Kashmir.

The officer said that it was wrong tendency for the educated youth to pick up arms.

“Today itself, the DGP said that we have to bring misguided youth back to the mainstream but there are elements and we have to fight against such elements,” he said.

“It’s a second case from Doda, the first one happened in July when another youth had picked up arms. He got killed in an encounter last week,” said Qadri.

The DIG informed that Abbas Wani was working with a pharmaceutical company in Jammu before disappearing from Bhatindi area.

“They are four real brothers, one step brother and three sisters. Their father Ghulam Abbass Wani is an engineer in rural development department. The entire family is well educated,” police sources said.

Haroon’s uncle Farooq Wani has appealed him to come back.
