ULTRA KILLED IN RIFLESNATC­HING BID

SRINAGAR: A local Lashkar militant was killed and a policeman sustained injuries when militants attacked a police picket in south Kashmir’s Achabal. The attack was repulsed by the guards on duty.

Officials said that on Friday midnight, militants attacked a police picket, however, men on guard duty foiled the attack by killing one of the attackers. The militant has been identified as Bilal Ahmad of Yaripora Kulgam and an AK-47 rifle was also recovered from his possession.

Police spokesman said the militant was affiliated with Lashkar-e-taiba.

“He had joined militancy some three months ago and his involvemen­t was also establishe­d in a weapon snatching case earlier. He was involved in carrying out terror attacks on the security forces and civilian atrocities in the area.”

Officials said that one policemen also sustained injuries in the incident who was taken to the nearby hospital and is stable now. “Two cars have been also seized by police from the spot which were apparently used by the militants. Police have registered a case and started an investigat­ion.”

Officials however said that militants had come with an intention to steal weapons from the police picket, however, alert jawans of the police averted the attack.

Soon after the attack, army and police launched a cordon and search operation to track down the militants as the officials said that there were several militants who could have been involved in the operation.

Following the killing of the militant, the mobile internet was suspended as there were apprehensi­ons of protests in the area.
