Soldier among 3 wanted in Haryana gangrape case

Arrest warrant issued against soldier posted in Kota, Rajasthan; police team sent to nab him, ₹1 lakh award announced for info on 3 accused

Hisar: haryana police launched a hunt for three men, among them an army personnel, for the alleged rape of 20-year-old woman last week, officials said on Saturday.

Haryana director general of police (DGP) BS Sandhu said a police team had been sent to Rajasthan, where the army man believed to be the main accused is posted. “The other two accused will also be arrested soon,” he said. The DGP said senior officials will also investigat­e if there was any negligence on part of the police in responding to the case. The police also released photograph­s and names of the three accused —Pankaj, Manish and Nishu.

HISAR: An arrest warrant was issued on Saturday against a soldier posted in Kota of Rajasthan, who is the main accused in the gangrape of a 20-year-old woman from Rewari at Kanina in Mahendraga­rh district.

Haryana director general of police (DGP) BS Sandhu said, “A police team has been sent to Rajasthan to arrest him. The other two accused will also be arrested soon,” he said.

The accused soldier has been identified as Pankaj.

The DGP said senior officials will also conduct an inquiry to see if there was any negligence on the part of the police.

The police also announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for informatio­n about the three accused who gangraped the woman when she was on her way to a coaching centre on September 12.

Besides Pankaj, the FIR names two other accused — Manish and Nishu. The police have released the photograps of all the thee accused. In her complaint, the woman said that Pankaj and Manish drugged her and took her near a well in a car where she recognised Nishu after gaining consciousn­ess. However, she was again drugged and allegedly gangraped.

Nuh superinten­dent of police (SP) Nazneen Bhasin, who leads the special investigat­ion team (SIT), told reporters in Rewari, “Medical reports confirm rape but how many committed the crime is a matter of investigat­ion.

Samples have been sent to the forensic lab.”

Talking to HT, Bhasin said, “A statement of the victim under Section 164 of the CRPC has been recorded. Now the SIT is at the crime scene and collecting more details about the case.”

Bhasin visited the victim in hospital and said her condition is

stable. On the other hand, the family members of the victim told HT that even during the recording of the statement, the condition of the victim was not stable. Her father said the statement was recorded in the middle of the night at around 1am.

Meanwhile, the police provided security to the victim’s family on the directions of Haryana State Women Commission chairperso­n Pratibha Suman.

The National Commission for Women also wrote to DGP Sandhu, seeking updates on the case.
