HISAR: A ‘Mahapanchayat’ of people from 51 villages held in Kosli town of Rewari district on Friday demanded the arrest of the two absconding accused in the Rewari gangrape case at the earliest and threatened to hold protests if they are not nabbed by September 24.

The congregation, also attended by Swaraj India president Yogendra Yadav, decided to hold another panchayat in front of the Rewari deputy commissioner’s office September 24 if their demand is not met.

The panchayat also decided to launch a “big protest” on October 1, if the police fail to arrest armyman Pankaj and his co-accused Manish.

The police have so far arrested only one of the main accused, Nishu, along with two others.

The three main accused had drugged and gangraped a 19-yearold Rewari girl when she was on her way to a coaching centre at Kanina in Mahendragarh district on September 12.

“The Mahpanchayat also formed an 11-member Sangharsh Samiti, which will decide the future course of action,” said Amit Kumar, husband of Sarita Devi, sarpanch of the victim’s village.

“The Mahapanchayat passed a resolution, which also demanded suspension of the police personnel who delayed action after receiving the complaint of the victim and hearing of the case by a fast-track court,” Amit added.

Talking to Hindustan Times , Yogendra Yadav said, “I made a few suggestions during the mahapanchayat , including stopping of sale of liquor in the village as women feel unsafe when drunkards roam around, proper education of children and inculcation of family values among them, including respect to women.”

NISHU’S POLICE REMAND EXTENDED FOR 4 DAYS

Meanwhile, the special investigation team (SIT) probing into the case on Friday produced the three arrested accused in the case before a court in Kanina , which extended the police remand of

Nishu, one of the main accused, for four days.

The two others accused — Deendayal, the owner of the tubewell room where the crime was committed and Sanjeev, a registered medical practitioner (RMP) who attended the victim

when her health condition deteriorated, were sent to 14-day judicial custody.

Kanina deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Vinod Kumar said, “Police teams are working round the clock to arrest the two absconding accused.”
