More docs, medical colleges will boost healthcare: Prez
Says sweeping changes underway in health sector
DHARAMSHALA:“SWEEPING changes are underway in the Indian healthcare ecosystem which will improve health services in the country,” said President Ram Nath Kovind at the first convocation of Dr Rajendera Prasad Government Medical College (RPGMC), Tanda, in Kangra on Monday.
“India has achieved remarkable success in the health sector. There are, however, many challenges which need to be addressed and government, doctors and other stakeholders will play a crucial role in this,” said Kovind, who is on a two-day visit to Himachal Pradesh.
He added that there was a need for a large number of good doctors and medical colleges for the delivery of effective health services.
The President awarded 110 degrees, including 11 gold medals. As many as seven girls bagged gold medals.
“The Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Ordinance will stimulate setting up, expansion and modernisation of medical colleges and curb institutions exploiting students and patients,” said Kovind.
On Ayushman Bharat, the
President said the scheme was the largest health protection team in the world which will ease financial burden of crores of families caused in medical exigencies and treatment.
Advising graduating medical students to strike a balance between career and social duties, Kovind said, “It’s not only a source to earn a livelihood but a noble profession where human emotions are given priorities.” He added that satisfaction a doctor gets by saving a life can’t be valued through the lens of
money.
Remembering his first visit to the state, Kovind described Himachal as the land of inspirational people. “I am delighted to attend the convocation of an institution which has memory of 1st President of India associated with it,” he said.
Governor Acharya Devvrat, who was also present at the occasion, congratulated students and said young doctors should serve humanity with dedication and commitment. “Younger generation should lead harmonious and
simple life and doctors should also motivate people to adopt simple and tension free life,” said the governor.
Himachal Pradesh chief minister Jai Ram Thakur also congratulated RPGMC. “Due to difficult geographical and topographical constituents of the state, creating quality infrastructure was the biggest challenge. Despite this, Himachal has made tremendous progress in every sector,” Thakur said. The CM also urged youth to collectively fight the drug menace.
