Jalandhar-based woman killed for objecting to smoking on train

SASARAM (BIHAR): A 55-year-old woman, her son and daughterin-law were brutally thrashed by three men when the former objected to their smoking on Jallianwalla Bagh Express, government railway police said on Saturday.

The woman, identified as Chinta Kuwar, succumbed to injuries.

She had been living in Jalandhar with her sons and was undergoing treatment for a respiratory disease.

Chinta, her son Rahul and daughter-in-law Babita were on way to their native village in Dehri-on-sone municipal area in Rohtas district of Bihar to celebrate Chhath Puja.

As the train reached Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, three men lit cigarettes to which Chinta objected citing her ailment.

But the trio picked a fight and passed objectionable comments on Chinta and Babita.

When Rahul tried to intervene, they thrashed him and also assaulted Chinta and Babita.

The accused tried to flee by pulling a chain.

Two of them escaped, but one Sonu Yadav was caught by passengers and handed over to GRP at Shahjahanpur station.

Injured Chinta was rushed to a Shahjahanpur hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.

Injured Rahul and Babita have also been admitted to the hospital.

Chinta is survived by two sons, a daughter-in-law and two teenage daughters.

Chinta’s sons Rahul and Ranjit started working at a private factory in Jalandhar after their father Rang Bahadur Prasad’s death about five years back.

The accused was arrested and the body was sent for post-mortem examination, GRP police station in-charge, Shahjahanpur, AK Pandey said.
