10,000-litre chemical seized from truck on way to Amritsar
Chemical was meant for manufacturing illegal liquor, say police
JALANDHAR: Over 10,000 litre of chemical, to be used for making illegal liquor and supplied during the ensuing Lok Sabha polls, was seized from a truck on Sunday.
A checkpoint was set-up at GT Road Atta following the tipoff and a truck coming from Ludhiana which was being escorted by a Toyota Innova was stopped. The truck and Innova were signalled to stop but car driver fled and the truck was seized, SSP Navjot Singh Mahal said.
“We found chemical in 15 plastic cans, each of 200 liters, and 148 plastic cans of 50 liters,” SSP said.
Jalandhar deputy commissioner (DC) Varinder Kumar Sharma and SSP Navjot Singh Mahal said the seizure was result of strict vigil by the civil and police administration in the wake of upcoming polls. SSP said a police party led by assistant sub-inspector Goraya Harpal Singh got a tip-off that some people were coming from Rajpura to Amritsar with a huge quantity of chemical, which was to be used for preparing illegal liquor and supplied during the upcoming polls.
Truck driver Kulwant Rai alias Kanta, resident of Basarke Bhaini, Amritsar, and Akashdeep Singh alias Akash of Meharbanpur, Amritsar, were arrested.
The DC said rural police have recovered 10,000 litre of chemical which was to be used for making liquor ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.
