AMRITSAR: A 28-year-old man was hacked to death by three brothers with a sharp-edged weapon when he was on his way to cast vote in Sarli village under Goindwal Sahib sub-division in Tarn Taran district of Khadoor Sahib parliamentary constituency.

The deceased has been identified as Bunty Singh, a labourer, while the accused are Sukha, Gora and Soni of the same village.

The incident took place at around 8:45 am when the deceased was on his way to the village’s polling station to cast vote. As per the police, the accused were drunk and they killed Bunty after entering into a minor altercation over some personal enmity.

Deceased’s father Charanjit Singh, however, claimed his son was murdered after difference of opinion over casting vote, said, “At around 8:30 am, my son had gone to cast vote. After some time, he came back as he had forgotten his Aadhaar card.”

He said, “My son was on his way to the polling station again after collecting Aadhaar card when he was waylaid by the accused. A minor altercation ensued between the accused and my son over casting vote. The quarrel turned violent and one of the accused Gora attacked my son with a sharp-edged weapon, injuring his neck. The accused fled the spot. I rushed my son to Vaironwal government hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. We are Congress workers and the accused are Akali supporters.”

Tarn Taran SSP Kuldeep Singh Chahal said, “The accused, who are brothers, were drunk and had personal enmity with the deceased. The murder has nothing to do with election or casting vote.” SHO Kawaljit Singh said, “A case under Section 302 ( murder) of the IPC has been registered against the trio. Efforts are on to arrest the accused.”
