Nagar kirtan from Nankana Sahib concludes in Sultanpur Lodhi today

JALANDHAR:THE Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) will lay the red carpet to give a rousing welcome to the nagar kirtan (religious procession) from Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak, that will conclude in Sultanpur Lodhi on Tuesday.

The procession, which visited 17 states after it entered India, will be received by Akal Takht acting Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh. It will start from Kapurthala in the morning. The gurdwara body will lay the red carpet for it from Gurdwara Sant Ghat to Gurudwara Ber Sahib in Sultanpur Lodhi and press a chopper to shower flowers on it.

It entered India on August 1 and is the first to come from the neighbouri­ng country. It went to various cities of Punjab and 17 states, including Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa, Telangana, Maharashtr­a, Gujarat and Rajasthan.

It also visited the five takhts (temporal seats) of Sikhism — Akal Takht, Takht Keshgarh Sahib (Anandpur Sahib), Takht Damdama Sahib (Talwandi Sabo), Takht Patna Sahib (Bihar)

SGPC secretary Manjit Singh said the nagar kirtan will reach Gurudwara Ber Sahib, Sultanpur Lodhi, in the evening after going to Gurdwara Sant Ghat in the town where Guru Nanak gave the concept of ‘mool mantra’. People lent an immense support to the procession across the country, he added.

SCHOOLS TO REMAIN CLOSED TILL NOV 15

The administra­tion on Monday issued a circular that all government and private schools in Sultanpur Lodhi sub-division will remain closed from November 5 to November 15. Deputy commission­er DPS Kharbanda said the decision was taken considerin­g the safety of children due to the increasing rush of pilgrims.
