FLAWED USE OF FORCE

Apropos the article ‘The Indian State’s flawed use of force’ by Prashant Jha, the extra-constitutional use of police force by the central government is not in accordance with law. Jha has clearly delineated three scenarios in recent times which make us think that somewhere the freedom of ordinary citizens has been impinged. Such acts where a citizen starts fearing the forces which are there for his or her protection will have a negative impact on the democratic set-up. The government must exercise restraint and find efficacious solutions through dialogue to solve the conflicts with the students and political opponents.

A DIVISIVE ACT

Apropos the article ‘CAA violates Constitution tenets’ (January 13), the central government should not have implemented the Act when the country has two radical views and is in turmoil. The ruling BJP has failed to convince the people over the basic issue of discriminating on the grounds of religion. On the face of it, the CAA seems to be a divisive and disruptive step by the government. Instead of implementing such a controversial Act, the government should have taken measures to boost GDP, create jobs and improve relations with foreign countries.

COURT’S OBSERVATION ON ANTI-CAA PROTESTS

A Delhi court’s observation that there’s nothing wrong about people protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is welcome. The judiciary is questioning the conduct of the Delhi Police in handling anticaa protests in the national capital. People’s faith is restored in the judiciary by such observations.

CRIME AGAINST WOMEN

The Supreme Court is right in rejecting the curative petitions of two of the convicts in the 2012 Delhi gang rape case. It is the need of the hour to stop the crime against women, which can be done only when stringent punishment is given to criminals. The judiciary must be strict with rape convicts as they deserve no mercy. This way, the judiciary can restore the hope, faith and trust of citizens in itself.

DSP’S TERROR LINKS

The development about the suspected terror links of arrested DSP Davinder Singh in Jammu and Kashmir is a dangerous sign for the security forces and the country as a whole. Though he is denying the allegations, a thorough investigation will reveal the facts. The politics over the issue is also condemnable. The Congress should have waited till the conclusion of investigation into the matter. Irresponsible statements will demoralise our security forces.

The erstwhile state of J&K had honoured DSP Davinder Singh on the Independence Day in 2018. Every year on the Republic Day and Independence Day, public servants and police officers are honoured at district headquarters on the recommendations of respective departments. Later, people start demanding withdrawal of such honours when some officer indulges in illegal activities. Caution must be exercised while choosing such officers for honours.

It is shocking to hear about the suspected terror links of decorated DSP of the J&K Police. If he is found to be guilty, it will be a big blot on the police. In that case, he must be given exemplary punishment. There are also chances of involvement of politicians. There is every likelihood of involvement of security personnel from the army as well as paramilitary forces. A thorough investigation is needed to uncover the possible nexus between militants and security personnel.

RISING INFLATION

The continuous rise in inflation (now 7.35 %) is breaking the back of the common man. The food prices have risen by 14.12%, forcing the poor to go without even bare minimum vegetables, which have seen a hike of 60.5% in prices. The rising unemployment had already left the youth dejected. The misery has increased with the surge in prices of essential commodities, and growth slowdown. The government has to take immediate corrective measures to arrest the economic downfall, and restore the faith of people in our financial institutions.

Vegetables have become highly expensive. After the hike in onion price, the prices of tomato and potato have begun to rise as bad weather and crop damage have impacted the supplies. Experts fear that the consumer inflation will spike further. The rising inflation is hitting the poorest the hardest.

AN AGGRESSIVE CHINA

This refers to the editorial ‘An aggressive China is back’ (January 15). China’s policy is to keep the disputes lingering on and simultaneously create moves to assert its claims on territories on land, sea and space with neighbours. Countries like Indonesia, Japan are affected like India. Japan, Indonesia, India and other affected countries must forge close ties and render each other meaningful help to counter China’s advances.
