SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir administration has stripped deputy superintendent of police Davinder Singh of the Sher-ekashmir police medal for gallantry, an official order said on Thursday.

Police had arrested the officer at Mir Bazar in Kulgam district on Saturday, along with Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists Naveed Baba and Altaf, besides a lawyer who was operating as an overground worker for terror outfits.

The order, signed by J&K home secretary Shaleen Khabra, said: “Consequent upon the arrest of Davinder Singh on January 11 while trying to assist terrorist to travel outside J&K and recovery of arms and ammunition which amounts to disloyalty and conduct that has brought the force into disrepute, the Sher-e-kashmir Police Medal for Gallantry, is hereby forfeited.”

Davinder was awarded the gallantry medal by the erstwhile J&K government in 2018 for his participation in countering a fidayeen attack at district police lines in Pulwama in August 2017.

On Wednesday, Jammu and Kashmir Police said it is recommending to the central government that Davinder Singh should be sacked.

Davinder is believed to have taken Rs 12 lakh for smuggling the two to Chandigarh for providing them accommodation for a couple of months, officials said.

On Tuesday, police said searches were carried out at Singh’s residence here, next to the Army’s XV corps headquarters at Badami Bagh cantonment, where he had sheltered Naveed, Altaf and a new joinee in the banned terror outfit.
