‘I don’t give in to mindless trolling’

- Sangeeta Yadav

Actor Kritika Kamra isn’t one to mince words when it comes to pressing sociopolitical issues, be it the Palghar lynching incident or the plight of migrant workers amid the lockdown. And needless to say, she was subject to trolling for her views on these subjects.

“It has been more than 60 days of lockdown and watching migrants suffer on the road is very disturbing. When I tweeted about it (migrant workers’ plight), the first question one of the trolls asked was, ‘What are you doing in this?’. I feel it is none of their business to know. I’ve done my bit through charity. It’s a personal decision and one should keep it private. Even if you take care of the needs of your staff and their families, you’re doing charity. We shouldn’t make it an obligation for someone,” she asserts.

However, Kamra, 31, admits that sometimes, trolls can get very vicious, adding, “It’s very tempting to reply to them, but I ignore it. I don’t give in to mindless trolling. However, if there is scope for a healthy discussion, I do reply.”

The actor feels that instead of trolling, we as citizens should exercise the right to question our government, the decisions made by leaders and hold them accountable for things which are going wrong in the country. “I like to be informed and well-read about government policies and decisions. Every time you question the authority, there are always going to be people who will support you and others who’ll troll you. But, we shouldn’t stop ourselves from doing this,” concludes Kamra, who is helping traditional weavers in Madhya Pradesh to deal with the crisis.
