10 fatalities, 357 fresh virus infections in J&K

11-day-old girl from Kulgam among the dead; active cases 4,355

SRINAGAR/JAMMU: A 11-day-old girl was among 10 people who died due to Covid-19 infection in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday. The Union territory has also recorded 357 fresh cases, taking the tally to 10,513, officials said.

Of the new cases, 295 are from Kashmir and 62 from Jammu division. Among these, 45 patients have a travel history. As many as 15 CRPF personnel were also found infected.

ASI INFECTED , POLICE STATION SEALED

The Janipur police station in Jammu was closed for public on Sunday after an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) tested positive for Covid-19. As per a notice at the entrance gate of the police station, the building has been turned into a quarantine centre following detection of the case.

A police official said the police station has been kept out of bounds for the public for the time being as all the policemen posted there are being tested for coronaviru­s as a precaution­ary measure.

SENIOR IAS OFFICER TESTS POSITIVE IN SRINAGAR

A senior IAS officer, on way to Ladakh from Jammu, tested positive for Covid-19 in Srinagar late on Saturday, officials said.

Official sources said he has been hospitalis­ed in a nursing home in Srinagar. “Three to four secretarie­s of the IAS officer and 16 other staff members have been quarantine­d and are being tested for the disease,” they said.

DEATH TOLL 179

Ten more people succumbed to the virus in the UT on Sunday. With this, the death toll has risen to179—162 fatalities in Kashmir and 17 in Jammu division till date.among the dead was a 11-day-old girl from south Kashmir’s Kulgam district—the youngest to die of the disease in the UT. Last month, a 15-day-old baby from Srinagar had also died due to the infection. Both the toddlers had heart ailments.

A doctor at Sher-i-kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, where the Kulgam child succumbed, said the baby was suffering from a congenital heart disease.

A 58-year-old man tested positive for coronaviru­s after his death at a hospital in Jammu.the critically ill patient, hailing from Simbal Morh, was admitted in the Government Medical College (GMC) hospital here on Friday and died the next day, the officials said.

They said the deceased was suffering from lung disease. His body was cremated in accordance with the set protocol in the presence of his family members.

Union minister Jitendra Singh on Sunday chaired a meeting in Srinagar to review, monitor and evaluate the situation amid spike in Covid-19 cases in Kashmir division. Singh asked the authoritie­s to ensure strict implementa­tion of the lockdown guidelines for the safety of people.

He stressed for devising an effective strategy to overcome the spread of disease.

Active cases in the UT stand at 4,355 after 84 more patients recovered on Sunday.
