BATALA: The BSF seized over 64 kg of heroin from the Ravi river that flows along the India-pakistan international border in Punjab’s Gurdaspur on Sunday, officials said.

The contraband, weighing 64.33 kg, was found in 60 packets concealed in long fabric cloth tubes and tied to a bunch of water hyacinth floating in the river, they said. The consignment was “pushed” into the river from Pakistan to the Indian side and BSF troops deployed at the border outpost in Nangli, near Dera Baba Nanak, spotted it.

BATALA: The Border Security Force (BSF) seized 60 packets heroin, weighing 64.3kg, from the Ravi river that flows along the India-pakistan international border in Gurdaspur district in the wee hours of Sunday.

The area falls under the Nangli Ghat border outpost near Dera Baba Nanak, which is manned by the 10th battalion of the border guarding force.

Addressing a press conference, BSF deputy inspector general (DIG) Rajesh Sharma said the troops noticed some suspicious movement in the river around 2am and swung into action. On search, the contraband was found in 60 packets in four fabric cloth tubes and tied to a bunch of water hyacinth floating in the river, he said.

The consignment was pushed into the river from the Pakistan side, but the smugglers managed to flee taking advantage of the darkness, he added.

A 1,500-metre-long nylon rope was tied to the consignment of drugs in order to enable someone to pull it towards the bank, he said, adding, “It was for the first time in the Gurdaspur sector that the drug smugglers used the Ravi river to sneak contraband into Indian territory,” he added.
