JAMMU: Three nomads, including a woman, were buried alive under a landslide triggered by heavy rains in a remote area of Shodol in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district during the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.

Reasi senior superintendent of police Rashmi Wazir said, “Heavy rains triggered a landslide that came crashing down on a dhok (a cave type temporary shed) where these nomads were sleeping with their cattle.” The victims were buried alive.

The decease have been identified as Khalil Ahmed, 22, son of Mohammed Rafiq of Jamlan, his wife Rukhsana Bagum,19, and Mohammad Aslam, 25, son of Mohammed Rafiq, all residents of Tehsil Mahore.

A police party along with locals reached the spot and recovered the bodies, Wazir said.

Some buffaloes and other animals also reportedly got buried under the landslide.

In another incident, the official said 40-year-old Wali Mohammad was killed in a landslide in Khandi Gali Dhok on Monday. The deceased was grazing his cattle when the landslide occurred, he said, adding five buffaloes were also killed in the incident

Heavy rains triggered a massive mudslide that swept away a large stretch of the Jammu-srinagar national highway in Dalwas area near Batote in Ramban district early Tuesday bringing traffic movement to an abrupt halt. The 270-km long Jammusrinagar

highway is the only allweather surface link that connects Kashmir with the outside world. SSP Traffic National Highways, JS Johar said, “A mudslide swept away a stretch of the road at Dalwas this morning around 5 am. Now, concrete material has to be filled up where the road was swept down the valley.”

He said nearly 500 light vehicles have been stranded due to the mudslide. Johar said that restoration will take some time.
