Minister Brahm Mohindra, 3 MLAS among 1,746 test positive in state

MOHINDRA, 74, IS THE FIFTH MINISTER IN AMARINDER CABINET TO BE TESTED POSITIVE; AMRITSAR TOPS THE DEATH TALLY AS 7 MORE SUCCUMB TO VIRUS

LUDHIANA/JALANDHAR/AMRITSAR/ BATHINDA/PATIALA: Punjab on Thursday reported 37 Covid-related fatalities taking the death toll to 1,256. The state also witnessed its sharpest single-day spike of 1,746 cases, pushing the state’s tally to 47,836, according to a bulletin released by the government.

A day before state assembly session, four more Punjab MLAS, including local bodies minister Brahm Mohindra, tested positive for the virus.. Mohindra shared the informatio­n on his twitter account saying he had fever on Wednesday following which he got himself tested. “I have been tested positive and isolating myself,” he tweeted.

Mohindra, 74, is the fifth minister in Amarinder cabinet to be tested positive for the virus. Earlier, rural developmen­t minister, Tript Rajinder Bajwa (recovered), jails minister Sukhjinder Singh Ranhdawa, revenue minister Gurpreet Kangar, industries minister Sham Sunder Arora were tested positive.

The MLAS who tested positive on Thursday include, suspended SAD MLA Parminder Singh Dhindsa, Congress MLA Darshan

Singh Brar and Dalbir Goldy.

Amritsar topped the chart with seven deaths followed by five each from Ludhiana, Sangrur and Mohali, four from Patiala, two each from Hoshiarpur, Pathankot and Tarn Taran, and one each from Barnala, Fazilka, Kapurthala, SBS Nagar and Rupnagar, the bulletin said.

Ludhiana again logged the highest number of positive cases in the state with 350 infections, followed by 210 in Gurdaspur, 188 in Patiala, 186 in Jalandhar, 178 in Mohali, 127 in Bathinda, 94 in Hoshiarpur, and 74 in Amritsar.

A total of 741 coronaviru­s patients were discharged as they recovered from the infection. So far 30,972 people have been cured of the infection.

Currently, there are 15,608 active Covid-19 cases in the state, according to the bulletin.
