IVANKA BATS FOR TRUMP, SAYS HE IS A ‘PEOPLE’S PRESIDENT’
On last day of Republican convention, president paints his rival as ‘destroyer’
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump accepted the Republican nomination for a second term with an attack on Joe Biden, saying his Democratic rival “will be the destroyer of American Greatness” and not the “saviour of America’s soul” he claims to be.
In his speech on Thursday, Trump sought to portray Biden as weak on China, immigration, foreign policy and a “Trojan Horse” for the radical left wing of his party that will drive the country to lawlessness and chaos.
He framed the November 3 election as a choice between “two parties, two visions, two philosophies, or two agendas” and portrayed Biden’s as dark and dystopian.
“This election will decide whether we will defend the American Way of Life, or whether we allow a radical movement to completely dismantle and destroy it,” Trump said as the Republican National Convention concluded.
He spoke from the south lawn of the White House, the first time a political event was held from what is considered a neutral ground. “Biden is a Trojan Horse for socialism,” Trump said, echoing a characterisation made on Wednesday by Vice-president Mike Pence in his acceptance speech at the convention.
He insinuated that Biden will be controlled by the progressive wing led by Bernie Sanders and young members of Congress such as Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Ilhan Omar. “If Joe Biden doesn’t have the strength to stand up to wild-eyed Marxists like Bernie Sanders and his fellow radicals, then how is he ever going to stand up for you?”
Trump defended his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, promising that a vaccine will be launched this year and “we will crush the virus”. He promised the US will land the first woman on the moon, and “will be the first nation to plant its flag on Mars.”
DAUGHTER IVANKA PITCHES IN FOR PREZ
Describing Trump as the “people’s president” and listing out his “people-friendly” policies, his daughter Ivanka Trump delivered a fiery speech in support of her father’s re-election bid.
“America doesn’t need another empty vessel who will do whatever the media and the fringe of his party demands. Now more than ever, America needs four more years of a warrior in the White House,” Ivanka said while introducing Trump for his speech.
