Punjab reports 51 deaths, 1,555 new Covid-19 cases

PATIALA/BATHINDA: PUNJAB on Friday reported 51 Covid-related fatalities taking the death toll 1,309. The state also logged 1,555 fresh cases pushing the tally to 49,378, according to a bulletin released by the government.

Amritsar topped the chart with 12 deaths, followed by Ludhiana 11, Patiala and Jalandhar five each, Sangrur, Tarn Taran, Fazilka, Fatehgarh Sahib, Mansa and Gurdaspur two each, Barnala, Bathinda, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Mohali and SBS Nagar one each.

Jalandhar had the highest number of cases at 211, Gurdaspur 182, Ludhiana 140, Patiala 109, Faridkot 115, Amritsar 81, Mohali 85, Sangrur 25, Bathinda 18, Ferozepur 84, Moga 54, Hoshiarpur 85, Pathankot 56, Barnala 40, Fatehgarh Sahib 65, Kapurthala 46, Faridkot 115, Tarn Taran 2, Rupnagar 21, Fazilka 37, SBS Nagar 8, Muktsar 61 and Mansa (30). A total of 2,036 coronaviru­s patients were discharged as they recovered from the infection. So far 33,008 people have been cured of the infection. currently, there are 15,063 active Covid-19 cases in the state.

5 AIIMS BATHINDA DOCS TEST +VE IN 10 DAYS

Five doctors at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bathinda have tested positive for Covid-19 in the past 10 days. AIIMS director Dr DK Singh is among those in home quarantine after three doctors tested positive on Thursday.

Official sources said the cases started surfacing after the AIIMS staff, including the management of the central institute, took part in the Independen­ce Day function on the campus. Social distancing was not observed at the function and AIIMS staff was seen posing for photos without masks. Officials were seen interactin­g with colleagues and guests at the event. AIIMS deputy director Col Devender Rawat said on Friday that additional medical superinten­dent Dr Satish Gupta was the first person from the institute to test positive last week. He said eight staff members of the institute are in home quarantine though none of them has a serious health condition. The report of more staff members is awaited.
