AMRITSAR Students of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) staging a protest demanding the option of giving examination through online mode entered into a scuffle with police outside the varsity campus in Amritsar on Thursday.

The incident took place when the protesting students were allegedly stopped by the police from entering the varsity.

At least five students received minor injuries with the turban of one tossed off by the cops, it was alleged.

The varsity authorities recently did away with the option of online mode of examination that was to be conducted through the National Testing Agency (NTA) by paying fee.

Demanding their semester examinations be conducted online without charging any fee, hundreds of students blocked the GT Road in front of the main gate for nearly two hours and then held a protest march till Khalsa College.

The students announced to stage an indefinite protest till their demand was met. The protest was going on till late evening.

In January, the varsity had said the students who wanted to appear for online exams could do so through the NTA after paying specific fee.

“During the coronavirus lockdown, classes were held online and the syllabi were not completed. The university first promised to conduct the examination online but later retracted.

Not all students can afford fee for every exam to be conducted online by NTA. Instead of handing over the examination process to NTA, the university must conduct the exams itself,” said Sanjay Luthra, a protesting student.
