Unite to break shackles of slavery, Akal Takht jathedar tells Sikh sangat on Foundation Day
AMRITSAR: Akal Takht acting jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh on Saturday addressed a function organised at the highest Sikh temporal seat to celebrate its foundation day and said, “We should come together if we want to break shackles of slavery.”
He said that established by Guru Hargobind Singh, the sixth Sikh master, the Akal Takht is not just a building for the Sikh community, but a true and pure concept, which embodied the sovereign existence of the ‘qaum’.
Appealing the entire Sikh community to forget their political differences and unite under the nishan (flag) Akal Takht, the jathedar said, “If we want to break the shackles of our slavery, then we have to come together and work with unity to ensure charhdi kala (rising spirit) of the community.”
In a message delivered on this occasion, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami said, “Akal Takht Sahib is the pride and glory of the Sikh community. This institution is and will always be part of the Sikh consciousness as a source of devotion and power, which has brightened the unique existence of Sikhs across the world.”
He urged the community to make the young generations aware of their traditions and historical days by imparting good education to them as well as inculcating teachings of religious values.
1955 police action anniv to be observed on July 4
The SGPC will mark the anniversary of 1955 police action on the Golden Temple on July 4. On Saturday, an akhand path (uninterrupted recitation of Guru Granth Sahib) was started in complex of the Golden Temple to observe the anniversary.
On July 4, 1955, the police of united Punjab arrived at the shrine to contain the activists of the SAD during Punjabi Suba movement. It is considered as the first security forces’ action on the shrine in free India, while Operation Bluestar is considered the second one.
