One booked for duping Moga man of ₹36 lakh

MOGA: The district police on Thursday booked Harpal Singh, a resident of Charik village for allegedly duping a resident of the same village of ₹36 lakh on the pretext of freeing him from a criminal case registered against him. Victim Surjit Singh, in his first informatio­n report (FIR), stated that Harpal Singh became his friend around one and half years ago, after he offered him to import an American medicine for treatment of sugar.

“One day, Harpal asked me to give my mobile to him as, he said, his mobile was not working, and in good faith, I gave my mobile to him. He used for some days. Later, he returned it to me. After some days, Harpal told me that the police have registered a case against him for smuggling fake currency as he had made calls from my phone,” he added.

Surjit stated that he got frightened and somehow wanted to get rid of it by clearing his name from the case. He said then Harpal Singh started demanding money for clearing his name from the case.

After the complaint, the police booked accused Harpal under sections 384 (punishment for extortion) and 420 (cheating and dishonestl­y inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code against the accused.
