HOME SECRETARY RAJIV MEHRISHI ON THURSDAY HELD TALKS WITH A TWITTER TEAM AND CHALKED OUT PLANS FOR THE LAUNCH OF TWITTER SEVA

NEW DELHI: In order to have an effective system for redressal of grievances posted on Twitter, the home ministry has decided to launch Twitter Seva service with the help of Twitter India.

The service already being used by ministries of external affairs, railways and commerce.

Once the home ministry also starts using it, all tweets related to the ministry will be available to a designated officer in aggregated form.

“It could be a tweet tagged to home ministry’s handle or it could catch certain key words in a tweet and make them available to the ministry. If there is anything on which any action is required, the ministry will get in touch with department concerned. The ministry is now deciding on the resources it will have to put in place for an effective Twitter Seva,” said a home ministry official on the condition of anonymity.

Union home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi on Thursday discussed the issue with a delegation of Twitter led by Raheel Khursheed, head of Twitter Seva for South Asia and South East Asia, and chalked out plans for the launch of the Twitter Seva.

At the moment, the home ministry doesn’t have an active twitter handle but home minister Rajnath Singh and his two deputies – Hansraj Ahir and Kiren Rijiju — are active on Twitter. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even as a 22-year-old youth, who became a victim of an alleged moral policing, took his life in Palakkad, another couple hounded and harassed by police took a sweet revenge on Friday by getting married at a simple function in Thiruvananthapuram.

While an active role played by social media led to the youth’s death in Palakkad, it came as a help in the couple’s case.

“We were planning to marry in April but we advanced it to give befitting reply to people who harassed us,” the couple said.

On Tuesday, the couple were questioned by the police when they were interacting at Museum Park . While they were being questioned, the couple discreetly recorded a video and posted it on Facebook live, which went viral in no time.

In the meantime, they were taken to a nearby police station and booked under Section 290 (creating public nuisance) of the IPC and set free on station bail after furnishing relevant documents. When the issue triggered a big protest, DGP Loknath Behra ordered a probe.

“They said I have put my hand over the shoulder of the girl. When I said it is a friendly overture, they threatened me,” said the man on condition of anonymity. When the issue came to light, the police claimed they intervened only after locals complained of their indecent behavior. In the second incident, the 22-year-old youth was found hanging in Attapady in Palakkad district on Thursday night.

On Valentine’s Day, Aneesh and his girl friend were harassed by goons on Azheekkal beach in Kollam district. They also took their photos and posted them on social media inviting enough humiliation to them, following which the youth ended his life.
