Trump vows to build border wall soon

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump vowed to start building a wall on the Mexican border “way ahead of schedule”, while addressing the Conservative Political Action Congress on Friday.

Trump pledged to always put Americans first and build a “great border wall”. He also promised to focus on “getting bad people out of this country”.

He was greeted by chants of “USA, USA, USA!” as he addressed the annual forum in Maryland.

“We’re building the wall…In fact it’s going to start very soon. Way ahead of schedule. It’s way, way, way ahead of schedule,” the US president said.

Trump denounced former Democratic rival Hillary Clinton’s characterisation of some of his supporters as belonging in a “basket of deplorables.” And perhaps most strikingly, the crowd at the Conservative Political Action Conference responded to his Clinton criticism with chants of “Lock her up!” just as they did at Trump rallies last year.

MORE REFORMS

Trump signalled that more reforms are ahead for the nation’s welfare system. He told conservatives that “it’s time for all Americans to get off welfare and get back to work.” He added: “You’re going to love it.”

‘WILL STOP TERRORISTS’ The president pledged that “in a matter of days,” his administration will take “a brand new action” to prevent potential terrorists from entering the US. Though he did not specify what is coming, White House officials have said a new immigration ban will be released shortly.

‘DON’T USE ANONYMOUS SOURCES, PLEASE!’

He also complained about the media’s use of anonymous sources and accusing news outlets of making up source for damaging reports about his White House. Trump spoke just hours after members of his own staff held a press briefing in which they refused to attach their names to the information.
