PUNJAB NEEDS MORE WATER

-

Punjab, the ‘Land of Five Rivers’ in the pre-Independence era, now has only three — Beas, Sutlej and Ravi — whose water is being utilised for irrigation. The rivers’ water also goes to Rajasthan and Haryana. Due to the declining underground water table, Punjab will certainly need more water for irrigation. The irrigation department is already cementing sides of the canals with the aim to take the water up to the tail end. It is high time to safeguard the interests of the Punjab farmers. Rajat Kumar Mohindru,

Jalandhar has rightly won accolades for becoming the first state in the county to implement the 7th Pay Commission. However, its benefits have not been extended to the teaching community serving in the colleges of the state. This stepmotherly treatment has deprived them of even the periodical hike in DA, generously bestowed upon all other categories of employees. The issue needs to be sorted out at the earliest.
