- Kamaljit Singh Kamal

GURDASPUR: Pakistani woman Tahira, who married an Indian Ahmadi Muslim, Chaudhary Maqbool Ahmad, of Qadian in Gurdaspur district on December 7, 2003, has finally been issued an Indian passport.

After her marriage, she was declined the Indian visa because of bitterness in the relations between India and Pakistan over the Parliament attack in 2001. With the intervention of veteran journalist Kuldip Nayyar, the then Atal Bihari Vajpayee government issued Indian visa to Tahira, but it restricted her movement to Qadian town.

After a long struggle, she obtained Indian citizenship in April 2016. In between, she was once issued a short-term visa to visit Pakistan to attend her father's funeral in 2009. The couple now has three children.

Her husband, a journalist with a vernacular newspaper, also expressed joy over his wife getting the Indian passport. Tahira expressed gratitude to the Indian media for supporting her cause.

She said the process to accord Indian citizenship to other women from Pakistan who are married here should be expedited. LUDHIANA: Uday Chand, who is accused of throwing his two teenage daughters in Sidhwan Canal, surrendered before a court here on Friday. The court sent him to three-day police remand.

One of the daughters, Jyoti (16), died and Priti (15) survived after being rescued by some passersby.

Three-wheeler driver Uday reaffirmed what his wife Laxmi had told the police. His wife was arrested on Wednesday and is in custody. Uday said Jyoti and Priti sneaked out of the house at midnight and returned in the wee hours.

He said the girls refused to disclose where they had been and with whom, which angered him. He confessed to the police that after pushing the daughters into the canal, he planned to file a missing person’s report to make the murder look as if the sisters took their own lives. But before he could contact the police, passersby pulled out girls from the canal and rushed them to hospital.

Priti, survived to narrate the incident, putting the parents in the dock.
