Sonepat village women strike at liquor vend, beat up drunk men
ROHTAK::Angered over the men in their families coming home drunk every day and spending their entire income on alcohol, women at Gamri village of Gohana subdivision of Sonepat district held a protest and attacked the local liquor vend demanding it be shifted out of the village.
A group of village women suddenly reached the liquor vend and started throwing the boxes containing country-made liquor out on road, and set these ablaze. The vend owner dropped down the shutters to escape their wrath.
The women also roughed up some drunk men who tried to steal liquor bottles which they had thrown on roads to burn.
They complained that the liquor vend had made a deal with all the ration shops of the village where he was supplying alcohol illegally to increase his sales. “Every shop in the village is selling alcohol. Men in our families are selling our crop produce and trading daily ration for liquor. If we go out, we don’t find milk, wheat or anything at home on coming back because the men sell them off to purchase liquor. There’s no money to pay school fees of children or to buy medicines,” said Savitri Devi, a resident.
Another woman complained that drunk men in the village have been harassing the women and girls by abusing and molesting them . “My husband misbehaves with me and our daughter every day when he comes home drunk.,” said Bhateri Devi.
The women, who also blocked the village road for several hours, were pacified after an assurance of state backward class panel chairman Ram Chander Jangra, who was passing by the area and stopped to assure them to take their demands to higher authorities.
