ROHTAK/CHANDIGARH: Haryana inspector general of police (prisons) on Saturday ordered suspension of a head warden whose video of an ‘obscene’ dance with a woman in Jind jail premises went viral on the social media.

The accused has been identified as constable Satwan Singh, who was on March 28 transferred to Karnal jail as per the routine transfers. The IG said an inquiry into the incident has also been ordered.

Jind jail superintendent Atma Ram Bishnoi said the video pertained to an incident on March 7, when the jail authorities had organised a cultural programme to mark Holi and had called a folk dance group for performance.

The video shows the uniformed constable in a jubilant mood, dancing and hugging one of the woman dancers, while some jail inmates are splurging money over them.

There were also reports that the jail authorities collected money from the prisoners to organise the event. However, Bishnoi termed these reports as false.

“It was a regular event held to mark the festival of Holi. The constable joined the dancers. There was nothing obscene as it is being portrayed in the media. When we heard that he was dancing, we had asked him not to repeat it in future to maintain discipline,” the jail superintendent said, adding that he felt suspension was a harsh punishment for the act.

Meanwhile, the warden’s dance video had triggered a debate on social media platforms, with many coming to the defence of the suspended cop. “He is dancing in an entertainment programme. What’s wrong in that? Is there a ban on policemen to dance?” asked Majeet Saini on a WhatsApp group.
