LET’S FOCUS ON DRUNKEN DRIVING, NOT LIQUOR BAN

-

The Supreme Court ban on liquor vends along highways has been a case of missing the woods for the trees. Being a Chandigarh native, I’ve seen the number of road accidents due to alcohol intake is high. Why hasn’t more been done to enforce stricter road rules? I stay in Abu Dhabi now where the one thing the Emirate has got spot on is road vigil. With cameras fixed on every street to police vehicles monitoring city roads and highways, the process of fining is automated and seamless. Heavy fines await offenders. Drinking, driving and road rage on Indian roads are a product of years of ignorance by governments in enforcing rules. Instead of crushing businesses and industries that rely on the availability of alcohol, focus on how to curb the lack of responsibility on roads. Law enforcement with vigilance and accountability are the answer.

Shaira Mohan, Abu Dhabi the Tricolour and Indian national anthem. This act shows Aamir’s respect for his country. He has risen above monetary gains and held the country’s esteem high. Nothing is more important than the nation. Harpreet Sandhu,

Ludhiana ordinance, violating the high court ruling, probably with a changed name.

MS Khokhar the interest of students. A benchmark for finalising the fee structure of private schools is needed as per the infrastructure offered.

Rajat Kumar Mohindru,

Jalandhar City Muslim University and Khalsa University. The plan did not materialise as Khalsa College refused to honour Prince George. Patriotic Sikhs were penalised. Khalsa College can be a deemed university and named Khalsa College University just like Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, is now PEC University. Amarinder should fulfil his promise of bringing back the Central University of Punjab to Amritsar, sanctioned by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh but taken to Bathinda by the Badals.
