EXTENDED MBBS SEATS: GMC GETS TIME TO WORK ON SHORTCOMINGS
AMRITSAR: In a bid to save the extended 50 MBBS seats of Government Medical College, the health officials have asked the Medical Council of India (MCI) officials to give them some time to fill in the gaps pointed out by them in the previous visits.
The MCI had pointed out many shortcomings of the college; the team expressed their displeasure over lack of staff, non-computerised outpatient department, along with cramped lecture rooms. Principal Dr BS Bal said, “The seats have not been cancelled. Secretary has asked for time to fill the gaps and comply with the MCI’s report. We will be looking at things under our control, rest the government has to do.”
“The secretary has asked for a certain period of time and assured of filling the voids,” he added.
The MCI is a statutory body with the responsibility of establishing and maintaining high standards of medical education and recognition of medical qualifications in India.
It registers doctors to practice in India, in order to protect and promote health and safety of public by ensuring proper standards in practice of medicine.
Last year in April, the MCI had approved the demand of 50 extra MBBS seats made by the college after which, many teams had conducted inspection.
