NEWDELHI: A year after a 22-yearold tailor from Rajasthan who eloped with an upper caste girl was murdered by her family, the Delhi Police arrested her 35-yearold uncle, a builder, in the alleged honour killing case.

The man, Vikram Joshi, along with the girl’s father, Mukesh Joshi, and other family members had allegedly thrown the tailor, Vishal Verma, down from a highrise building in Ghaziabad.

Vishal’s body was discovered on May 3 last year by UP Police, a day after he was abducted by the girl’s family from his cousin’s home in Uttam Nagar. After eloping with the girl from her home in Rajasthan’s Sikar, Vishal took her to his sister’s home. His cousin panicked when they told her about their plan to marry and settle in Delhi. She informed her father, a tailor in north Delhi’s Pitampura, who reported the matter to Vishal’s father, Ramesh, a tailor in Kolkata. Vishal’s family informed the girl’s family and asked them to reach Delhi to resolve the issue .

Pramod Kushwah, DCP (special cell), said that Vikram was arrested on Thursday from Amhedabad. A cash reward of ₹20,000 had been announced on Vikram’s arrest by Delhi Police. A Delhi court had declared him a proclaimed offender. Vishal belonged to a family of tailors at Burara village in Rajasthan’s Sikar and the 17-year-old girl was a Brahmin, police said.
