Man gets jail for failing to pay up ₹50 lakh in arrears
NEW DELHI: A Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice JS Khehar sent a man to Tihar jail on Monday after he failed to deposit ₹50 lakh despite assuring the court he would do so in a landlord-tenant dispute. “Why did you give an undertaking in court if you were not in a position to deposit?” the bench asked Surinder Singh Arora, who reportedly owes around ₹70 lakh rent arrears to his landlord. Arora had promised to pay up in February. But on the last hearing, neither was he present in the court nor did he deposit.
