NEW DELHI: Maruti Suzuki India Ltd will procure lithium-ion battery packs from a newly formed joint venture between Suzuki Motor Corp, Toshiba Corp. and Denso Corp as the country’s largest car maker looks to build a portfolio of hybrid cars, said Kenichi Ayukawa, MD and CEO, Maruti Suzuki. “Nobody is producing lithium-ion battery in India. To realise that (electric) vehicle, we need lithium-ion battery. That’s why Suzuki decided to make that manufacturing of lithium-ion battery packs here. They are already collaborating in Japan to produce hybrid vehicles. They want to take up this challenge here. We want to use the batteries for our cars.”
