Why a vacation is a must-do activity

- Promil Dada

With the calendar turning on the fifth month of the the year there is a lot of whining and complaining about the weather. Along with that there is a greater deal of vibrancy in the air, everyone seems to be planning activities during the vacations.

There is excitement, impatience for the holidays to begin as time seems to be passing slowly. Programmes are being chalked out, visits to grandma’s house are being coordinated, trips abroad may be on the charts and much more. Everyone is on the move, and the few who are staying put probably feel punished.

I remember this time last year and on a flashback will relive it again.

The school closed and the grandchildren arrived. The atmosphere was suddenly charged with restless energy. Had a glorious fun-filled time, responding with child-like enthusiasm, ofcourselacedwith guiltpangswhilegivingintothe demands of pastas, pizzas, noodles and a whole lot of ‘screen time’. But May is the time to chill for the holidays are on.

And then it was time for our vacation. Planning began. Reverse to the popular choice of hills in summer, we opted to visit the land of flora, fauna and fenny -- Goa. Arguments in favour were that it’s off season so we’ll be spared the crowds and taht it rains and feels like a hill station but without the stale, damp smell of wet bathrooms. It is lush and beautiful. The intermittent rain seems to pour a joyful feeling, the sea though not fit to swim seems to be dancing to the tune of nature’s symphony.

The most pleasurable thing for me about a trip like this is the change in the dynamics of our relationship. At home, life is on auto mode, the same routine and almost the same amount of interaction day after day. Living is comfortable but not exciting. Away from the environment, our behaviour seems to break out of its pattern. We talk more, communicate more and actually seem to have a conversation.

The pace is relaxed, fun and interactive. Information about family matters that lies buried under the weight of mundane routine is exchanged and shared. Planning the day, places to visit, choosing the cuisine seem to break the shackles of boredom. Goa is a land of easy life, musical, high on fenny and big on sea food. What a break from the routine!

Drunk on the elixir of life we are different people. Varieties and vagaries of human beings are truly amazing and absolutely intriguing. Being always on the move is attractive for some, while staying in their comfort zone is the only path for others. Each of us is on a journey, it is up to us to make it both interesting and invigorating.

It is time again to plan a vacation and this time too we would like to go to a place that is not teeming with people but has lots to offer by way of entertainment, places to discover, taste the local food and mix in with the people of the place, in fact just feel the pulse of the land. Looking forward to it!
