Aizawl threats won’t work: Patel
Let me make it clear that the AIFF does not work or get intimidated by any threat. AIFF works for the good of Indian football
MUMBAI: The All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Praful Patel said he won’t bow to the pressure created after I-League winners Aizawl FC threatened to fast unto death amid speculation that they may not be part of the top tier.
“They have sent a letter to me but) I have not received the letter yet because they won the I-League three days ago. Some threats have been issued.
“But let me make it clear that the AIFF does not work or get intimidated by any threat. AIFF works for the good of Indian football,” Patel said speaking at an event promoting grassroots football.
A proposed unification between the Indian Super League and the I-League to form the top rung of Indian football with eight ISL franchises and three I-League teams could see Aizawl FC left out in the cold.
“The road map has not yet been decided for next year. Today, as we speak, I-League is the official league of India. And if they (Aizawl FC) are the winners of the official league, why are they giving threats?” Patel said.
IFA THREATENS LEAGUE One day before AIFF meet representatives of Mohun Bagan and East Bengal in Mumbai to discuss the new league, the Indian Football Association (IFA) hinted at starting a breakaway league if need be so.
IFA general secretary Utpal Ganguli said that the Bengal unit would do whatever it takes to ensure commercial considerations don’t undermine Bengal football.
