Five crushed to death by speeding truck in Panipat

PANIPAT Five people were crushed to death by a speeding truck on the national highway-1 near Paseena village of Samalkha block of Panipat district on Tuesday morning.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Panipat deputy superinten­dent of police (DSP-headquarte­rs) Jagdeep Singh said three of the victims were trying to help out the driver and cleaner of a canter that had overturned on the NH-1 due to tyre burst. The canter loaded with pomegranat­es was on its way from Delhi to Himachal. A speeding truck coming from behind hit the overturned canter and crushed five people, including driver and cleaner of the canter.

While three people died on the spot, two others succumbed to injuries.

The deceased have been identified as Jitendra Singh, 28, of Jorasi village of Panipat district, Kuldeep Singh, 26, of Dandhola village of Panipat, Kundan Singh (45) of Panipat city, canter driver Kamal and cleaner Kamlesh, both residents of Solan district of Himachal Pradesh.

The DSP said the police have arrested the driver of the truck and booked him under Sections 279 and 304-A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

He said the bodies of the deceased were sent to the Panipat civil hospital for postmortem.
