NEW DELHI The income tax (I-T) department on Wednesday issued summons to Misa Bharti, daughter of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, and her husband Shailesh Kumar for allegedly accumulating benami assets and evading tax.

The couple will be questioned on June 6 and 7 in New Delhi.

On May 16, the I-T department had raided about two dozen properties in connection with the case and seized relevant documents.

The department sources said that a plot of land in New Delhi, bought from one Vivek Nagpal, is at the heart of the case. The couple face allegations of buying the plot for a cost of ₹1 crore.

The couple is accused of having shares in Mishail Packers and Printers Private Limited, a Delhi based private firm, which according to company records, is in the publishing business. The firm is suspected to have entered into benami deals for purchase of a farm house in New Delhi’s Bijwasan area.

The summons to the couple were issued a day after chartered accountant, Rajesh Kumar Agarwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on charges of money laundering for a firm linked to the politician’s daughter. ED believes that the chartered accountant acted as a mediator between two Delhi-based businessman brothers — Surendra Kumar Jain and Virendra Kumar Jain— and Mishail Packers and Printers Pvt Ltd.
