‘Eviction’ of 50 Dalit families: Villagers launch indefinite stir

- Surjit Singh

TARNTARAN: As the issue of alleged eviction of as many as 50 Dalit families from the residential plots, is still unresolved, the victim families along with labourer rights groups launched a stir at Patti for an indefinite period.

The plots were allotted by former SAD-BJP government. The families are from Nathu Chak village under Patti sub-division. As per information each homeless Dalit family of the village was alloted a residential plot of 5 marlas on Nov 11,2016. “Some families had laid foundations for their houses and few had even constructed buildings. But the upper caste people demolished the structures and grabbed our land on May 28,2017,” said Sukhdev Singh, former sarpanch and one of the victims.

The Dalit families even claimed that they have papers of the land, though no-proof was presented. He said, “They thrashed and abused us and did not even spare our female family members.” “We approached police many times but they have not taken any action,” he said.

Pendu Majdoor Sabha activist Chaman Lal who is leading the protest outside the SDM office said, “Until a case is not registered against the guilty and Dalit families are not given back the possession of their plots, the stir will continue.” DC DPS Kharbanda said, “I have assigned officials to see if the land was legally notified to the Dalit families.”
