ROHTAK:Police rescued a 66-yearold man from his residence in Dhalori village in Haryana’s Mahendragarh district on Thursday after his own son took him hostage and tortured him for refusing to transfer his agriculture land in his name.

His son and other family members allegedly kept him hungry, beat him and tied him to a cot for three days to pressurize him into transferring his three-acre land in the village.

The police said the neighbours of the victim gave them a tip-off about the incident after they heard Balbir Singh’s cries for help. The police raided the house and rescued Singh. He was taken to a health care centre which then referred him to the civil hospital..

After primary treatment, the victim gave a complaint to the police that his family members, including his wife, were pressuring him to transfer his land in his son’s name. The police said Singh had a sour relationship with his brother and wife, and was living in Bikaner in Rajasthan. He had come home some time back to check on his land when his family started mounting pressure on him. The police quoting the victim said he did not want to transfer his land as it was his source of livelihood.

“He said his family wanted to prove his mental condition was not stable to get his land. Based on his complaint, we have registered a case against seven members of his family, including his son and wife for illegal confinement, criminal intimidation and voluntary causing hurt. We have arrested his son Bhupinder Singh and nephew Abhay Singh. More arrests will follow,” said station house officer of Nangal Chaudhary police station.
