Ex- BKI handler held with 3kg opium

HOSHIARPUR A joint team of district police and special task force nabbed a former Babbar Khalsa Internatio­nal (BKI) handler, Makhan Singh, with 3 kg opium on Monday.

His accomplice was also arrested when they were smuggling contraband in a Tata Ace near Noorpur Jattan village.

Senior superinten­dent of police (SSP) Harcharan Singh Bhullar said that Makhan Singh and co-accused Joginder Nath of Manawali, Kapurthala smuggled narcotics from Rajasthan.”

We are investigat­ing their possible links with other drug smugglers,” SSP said. The police have registered a case under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotrop­ic Substances Act and impounded the vehicles.

Makhan Singh was released from Nabha jail in February, 2017 after completing his sentence. He was arrested under Arms Act in Amritsar in 2010. Makhan was also named in the Baddon dera head Pardhan Singh’s murder, with BKI activist Narain Singh Chaura, in the same year but was acquitted later. The police have arrested eight people and recovered 13 quintal (1,300 kg) poppy husk and 1-kg opium during a checking drive across the district.

Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopi, of Sultanpur Lodhi was arrested at Nidhawala village with 10 bags (weighing 40 kg each) of poppy husk from his Toyota Innova. His two accomplice­s, Buta Singh and Gurdev Singh, fled the spot.

In another incident, the city police recovered 10 bags (35 kgs each) of poppy husk from an SUV at Duneke village and arrested Surinder Singh, alias Shinder, of Kapurthala. His two aides, Deban Singh and Bikkar Singh, gave police the slip.

Ten more bags (40 kg each) of poppy husk were recovered from a truck at Charik village.

The police arrested Satnam Singh of Jagraon, while his associate Bikkar Singh managed to flee.

In a separate incident, Buta Singh and Lakhwinder Singh of Moga were arrested by the Kot Isse Khan police with 40kg and 70kg of poppy husk, while Balvir Singh of Nurpur Hakima was arrested by the Dharamkot police with 35kg poppy husk.

Meanwhile, the Ajitwal police arrested two persons, Anil Kumar of Bihar and Jagraj Singh of Chuharh Chak village, with 1kg of opium at Killi Chehal village here.
