AMRITSAR: The role of Amritsar police has come under scanner after it conducted a raid at chief minister’s camp office on Wednesday searching for a suspect. The two police inspectors who led the raid have now been suspended and also an IG level officer has been asked to probe the matter.

The city police had conducted a raid at the camp office based on a tip off that a suspect involved in a theft case was there.

The police did not find the suspect in the raid. Inspector Arwinder Singh and inspector Harinder Singh, who were transferred to police lines on Thursday were suspended by Amritsar police commissioner SS Srivastava. It is learnt that both IG and some senior officer from the Home Department will start the probe on Saturday. Sources said, “Since the two inspectors were sent to raid by a senior police officer of the city, this officer is likely to face serious action.”

Srivastava confirmed that both inspectors have been suspended and IG Bathinda Mukhwinder Singh Chhina has been given probe by the DGP office.

As the cops went there in big number and also searched the rooms of adjoining PWD rest house, the incident did not go down well with Bawa Singh Sandhu, officer on special duty (OSD) and other party leaders. Upset with the fact Sandhu immediately took up the matter with the commissioner and chief minister office. Few Congress members alleged that the police were accompanied by few Akali workers. Sources in the camp office said “The state government officials are unhappy with the raid and the way it was conducted in the presence of Akali workers.”

Sandhu had even said, “The presence of police officials was fine but the way Akalis accompanied them and they searched the complex was totally intolerable.”
