Tanwar starts ‘satyagrah’ in Karnal, Cong leaders stay away

- HT Correspondent

KARNAL: Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) president Ashok Tanwar started his three-day satyagraha here on Monday, but not even a single sitting MLA or senior leader of the Congress reached Karnal to attend his programme on the first day.

Tanwar, however, claimed that the satyagraha was being organised by the Congress and it is a state-level function.

Interestingly, several sitting MLAs of the Congress and other leaders had attended Kisan panchayat organised by Tanwar’s rival and former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda at Kurukshetra on last Friday.

In a statement issued here, Tanwar claimed that Congress leaders from Gurugram, Mahendargarh, Charkhi Dadri, Sirsa, Ambala, Sonepat, Karnal, Yamunanagar, Jind, Kaithal, Faridabad, Panipat and Panchkula have attended the programme.

When asked about the absence of Congress MLAs and other leaders Tanwar said, “All are invited and they can come but the everybody who has reached here is a Congress worker and leader.”

In his address, the HPCC chief targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar for “not fulfilling their election promises”. On the occasion, Tanwar also played pre-poll videos showing Prime Minister Modi and Haryana agriculture minister OP Dhankhar making promises to implement the Swaminathan Commission recommendations soon after the election.

He said that the BJP leaders have betrayed farmers and dalits by not fulfilling their election promises and warned the government against using bullets and forces on farmers.

He said that the satyagrah will soon reach other districts too and such programmes will be organised in all parts of the state.

“Our Prime Minister tweeted immediately over the fire in forests of Portugal but when six farmers were killed by the police in Madhya Pradesh, the PM kept mum,” he added.

TAKES PLEDGE TO

MAKE RAHUL GANDHI NEXT PM

On this occasion, Tanwar and his supporters also took a pledge to work tirelessly for the party and make Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi the next Prime Minister of the country in 2019. During the three-day programme, Tanwar and other Congress leaders are set to sit on hunger strike.
