The victim stayed quiet due to threat (from the accused). Her parents found out about her pregnancy when she was admitted to a hospital for typhoid treatment.

ROHTAK: A month after the successful abortion of a 10-yearold girl who was raped by her stepfather, the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) began abortion of another minor rape victim who was allegedly raped by a man of her village.

The 14-year-old victim, a resident of Kalanaur town of the district, was found to be three month pregnant by the medical board committee of PGIMS. As per the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, she was allowed abortion as her foetus was less than 20-weeks-old.

The victim’s family lodged a complaint with the police that three months ago, the victim was called by her neighbour at her house, who locked her in a room with another man of the village who raped her. The accused, identified as Ashok Kumar, threatened to kill her family if she informed anyone.

“The victim stayed quiet due to the threat. But her parents found out about her pregnancy when she was recently admitted to a hospital for typhoid. That is when she revealed her ordeal,” sub-inspector Susheela of the women police station said.

The police have arrested Kumar but the woman who facilitated the rape is still at large. She had offered ₹30,000 to the family to strike a compromise, but left the village fearing action after the family refused to accept money, an officer told HT.

District child welfare committee (CWC) member Pooja Kiran said the hospital has begun the MTP process of the victim via medicines, and they will get a report on it soon.

Last month, the incident of a 10-year-old girl becoming pregnant after being raped by her stepfather had sent shock-waves across the country.

The victim, found at the borderline of 20-week pregnancy, was allowed abortion taking humanistic approach by the PGIMS doctors.
