Congress MLA’s niece ends life, husband held

PATIALA/SANGRUR: Upset over the alleged illicit relations of her husband with his sister-in-law (bhabi), Congress MLA Nirmal Singh Shutrana’s niece Karamjit Kaur reportedly committed suicide by setting herself ablaze at her house in Manvi village near Amargarh on Sunday.

No one from her in-laws family, including her husband Jasbir Singh, tried to rush her to a hospital. Village sapranch and others took Karamjit to Amargarh Hospital where doctors declared her brought dead. She suffered more than 80% burns.

The police have booked Jasbir and his sister-in-law Sandeep Kaur under Sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtheranc­e of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Amargarh police station. While Jasbir has been arrested, Sandeep is on the run.

Bhupinder Singh, younger brother of MLA Nirmal Shutrana, said Karamjit married Jasbir in 2012. As her father had passed, Nirmal Shutrana and family members solemnised the marriage. However, after a year of marriage, she alleged that her husband had illicit relations with Sandeep. On Sunday, Karamjit had a verbal dual with Sandeep after which she took the extreme step, he said.
